Legend of Bagger Vance, The

Rannulph Junnah is the best golfer in Savannah. He’s living well and has a girl, Adele Invergordon, who’s the daughter of a wealthy landowner. The First World War starts, though, and Junnah goes to Europe to fight. The only survivor of a dangerous mission, Junnah doesn’t return to Savannah for 15 years. In 1930, he returns, and Adele’s father has already committed suicide during the Depression. Pressured by tax collectors to sell the golf course her father built to pay off debts, Adele, now older, vows to bring to Savannah the greatest match ever played on the greatest golf course, her late father’s. She’s able to round up the 2 greatest golfers of their time, Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen to play for $10,000. The townspeople insist on having “one of their own” compete also, and Rannulph Junnah is rounded up. Junnah now hangs out with bums and is an alcoholic, as he has lost his authentic swing from 15 years ago. At first he turns down the offer. He gets his old clubs and balls and starts practicing. He has lost his ability. Suddenly, Bagger Vance shows up. He offers to be Junnahs’s caddy and help him regain his “authentic swing”. He does, and Junnah agrees to play in the big match.

Luke Skywalker - The Perfect Hero

In the long Star Wars epic story, one great hero that we met in that first episode was the one that shook the universe. And that hero was Luke Skywalker. Have you ever wondered why Luke Skywalker is the most perfectly developed and conceived hero of a modern motion picture? One could even say that the entire success of the Star Wars franchise was successful because of this wonderful character of Luke Skywalker. There is something about this character that so hooked all of us into this series that we had to come back again and again and again and make Star Wars the most successful science fiction series of all time. So what makes Luke Skywalker such a great hero?

* Luke at all times was very human. From the moment we meet Luke Skywalker, there is nothing pretentious or puffed up about him. He was the perfect "boy next door" that just happened to be on a path to save the universe.

* Luke made mistakes. During his training, when Luke made mistakes and had to be corrected, he responded to those problems like any boy his age would. He complained, tried to justify himself and ultimately listened and learned from his teachers. This is the path we all go on at some point in our lives, although perhaps not under the instruction of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

* Luke went from being a nobody to becoming a great hero. When we meet Luke, he is an orphan on a far away planet and he felt insignificant and small. He had no resources, no inheritance and little chance to make something of himself. But The Force had big plans for him. We all love to see the little guy become the great hero and Luke Skywalker is a perfect symbol of that guy in all of us.

* Luke showed emotions. He was afraid, intimidated and confused. But he also showed such a tremendous ability to use his wits and his ability to figure things out as he went that we all were cheering for him to win in every situation.

* Luke was adorable. It doesn't hurt that he was just plain cute!

* Luke struggled with inner sin. As the initial trilogy went on, Luke was not always perfectly good. We saw the struggle he had to want to take a short cut. We saw him be drawn to the evil side of his own nature and almost fall to it.

* Luke prevailed. Any great hero struggles against titanic evil. And the war that Luke entered into was an evil so huge, it would have taken over the universe. Despite set backs that should have stopped any ordinary hero, Luke and his friends won against a horrible enemy over and over again. That's why we love him so much.

Luke had the heart of a champion. Luke Skywalker speaks to that noble thing inside of all of us that wants to make a mark on the universe for good. Despite his flaws and misstates he found his destiny to save the universe. Audiences love him because he touches that part of us that is also the heart of a champion.

The Star Wars Gamble

It seems almost impossible to imagine now that Star Wars is such a big part of our culture and the history of movies that before Star Wars hit the screens in May of 1977, it was considered to be a long shot to ever get made much less become the huge success that it did. But from the moment George Lucas got the vision for Star Wars and began drafting those early scripts, it was clear this was going to be a movie that would be like nothing that was ever seen before.

George Lucas was not a new kid on the block in Hollywood when he started trying to get his majestic space trilogy, Star Wars, made. While he wasn't the Hollywood powerhouse he is now, he had some credibility after making the delightful and successful American Graffiti. But even in that early movie making experience, Lucas was showing himself to be a visionary as American Graffiti went on the set in motion the 50s nostalgia trend, was spun off into the successful "Happy Days" TV show and launched the brilliant career of Harrison Ford.

You would think with that success, studios would have seen the genius of George Lucas and embraced Star Wars. But from the very beginning, Star Wars was a gamble. The vision was unique and untried and to studios, that meant risk. Too often innovative and bold film making is not successful at a financial level. Studios like to go with things that are going to make money for sure. That is why studio after studio turned down the chance to make Star Wars, even Universal Studios, who made American Graffiti, passed on it because they said it was a "silly idea." You can imagine how the studio ate those words when Star Wars took the movie business by storm and netted hundreds of millions of dollars for Fox Studios because they were willing to "take a chance" on George Lucas's incredible vision.

Star Wars created innovative story telling and movie making ideas that were untried before and so far ahead of their time that we overlook that in these days of movies that are completely computer generated. There is no question that the special effects of Star Wars had a lot to do with its massive appeal. Nobody has ever seen such realistic effects done before. If you can remember the first time you saw Episode 4, the first Star Wars to come out, that moment at the beginning when you see that huge Star Destroyer is one that literally takes your breath away. And the effects just kept on coming until the amazing battle scene at the end where the audience literally felt like they were right there in the fighter with Luke Skywalker, using the force to blow up the enemy star ship and escape as the fireball erupted all over the screen. It was a cinematic triumph.

We can all be grateful that one studio and one amazing film maker were courageous enough to make a movie that was unlike any before it. We, the movie going public, got this wonderful Star Wars series to enjoy and share with our kids for generations to come and the movie industry would never be the same because they took that chance.
